connectingvibes* - Trading Places - 2014 Season of Dance

2014 Season of Dance

connectingvibes* was established to encourage artists at the beginning of their career through the vehicle of a touring dance company. Members may stay part of the company for two years before they need to be forging their own independent careers. At the end of 2013 we said goodbye to a very successful team of artists whose time with the company culminated in a visit to the Grenada National Dance Festival where they successfully joined forces with Connecting Vibes USA for a programme of events. The Grenada team have assisted with rehearsals, as new members are welcomed into the company and encouraged to contribute their own uniqueness to the work.

The 2014 Season of Dance “Trading Places” presents established pieces, Breeze Easy and Jump Up, alongside reworked pieces Without Borders and What Cannot Done. This season also welcomes a humorous contribution The Loneliest Person on the Planet from guest choreographers Caroline Griffiths and Nina Haworth-Hurd.

Repertoire

Breeze Easy

Breeze Easy was originally created for Connecting Vibes USA. Choreographed by Beverley Glean, the work represents a fusion of contemporary and traditional movement demonstrating the flow, versatility and grounding inherent in the movement language of the Caribbean.

What Cannot Done

What Cannot Done is dedicated to the late Jenny Harris (1944-2012). Iinspired by Ben Okri’s poem “Begin With a Leap”. It is in part a prayer as well as a celebration of the strength and sense of purpose Jenny instilled in all those who came in contact with her. The title is taken from singer & songwriter Rachel Bennett’s composition, which was specially written for this work.

Without Borders

Without Borders was developed in 2013 as a duet the work has now been expanded into a piece for the company. Facing multiple questions and choices the traveller must decide whether to go forward or return to the safety of home.

The Loneliest Person on the Planet

The Loneliest Person on the Planet is a new work by guest choreographers Caroline Griffiths and Nina Haworth-Hurd.
“Knock Knock who’s there?” A man stands and tells a joke, a woman eats crisps and watches, Dutch courage as the old timer approaches the fading spotlight…

Jump Up

Jump Up is a vibrant, energetic and fun Calypso piece.
