in connectingvibes* Graduates

Nicoletta Bonanni and Veronika Koleva

Nicoletta Bonanni and Veronika Koleva arrived in the UK in 2011 from Italy and Bulgaria to enroll on the Foundation Degree in Dance and pursue their dance careers. Nicoletta originally trained in contact improvisation, rhythmic gymnastics and Hip Hop, while Veronika’s training was in Ballet and Contemporary with influences of Hip Hop. Their journey has not been easy as they have both struggled to support themselves and juggle work with their commitment to dance.

They both graduated from the course in 2013, travelled to Grenada with connectingvibes* and completed a BA (Hons) in Dance at Kingston University. To their credit they both gained a 2.1.

They have subsequently created their own company ‘Bokatialo’. Having worked together successfully throughout their college career and within connectingvibes* the partnership explores their shared interests in traditional African and Caribbean, Contemporary dance forms and physical theatre. Together they have formed a quirky duo, presenting an innovative movement language with passion and commitment.

Their first piece ‘It’s a Shame’ portrays the dynamics of a human relationship, playing with feelings of misery and miscommunication with an ironic comedic style. The work was recently premiered at Blackheath Concert Halls as part of the Unique Event, a joint venture between IRIE! dance theatre and Midi Music and at the recent connectingvibes* fundraiser. The piece was received with enthusiasm and interest as their creative movement language is not what is expected – it is new ! They are brave and confident performers.

Bokatialo are an example of progression and it was exciting for the new connectingvibes* performers to see artists at the next stage of their development. With respect to their experience with connectingvibes* they said the following:

In connectingvibes I grew up as a dancer and gained understanding about what a future dance career would be like. I also have great memories of my fellow dancers. It felt like I had another family.Veronika Koleva

Connectingvibes* was a journey which made me a more confident and disciplined dancer. It was also my biggest step towards choreographing.Nicoletta Bonanni

connectingvibes* are proud of Nicoletta and Veronika – so watch this space for updates on their development as they develop their own website and fill their diaries with performances/workshops.
