connectingvibes* Update

connectingvibes* will be collaborating with singer/songwriter and composer Rachel Bennett for a new piece ‘A Baptism’ to be launched as part of the new season of work 15-17 April 2015. This is an exciting venture as the company has enjoyed very successful projects with Rachel in the past – One Blood, a dance/music full-length piece that toured in 2005 and What Cannot Done – a tribute to the late Jenny Harris in 2013. A Baptism will be presented as a pilot version in April and developed as a full-length piece in October 2015.

connectingvibes* now have to fundraise to make the development of this exciting collaboration possible. The company is setting up a fund in the name of Mary Rimington (Chair of connectingvibes* 2009-2014) who sadly passed away in 2014. Mary was a staunch supporter of connectingvibes* and a keen music lover. Establishing a fund that supports a music collaboration seems a fitting tribute to an energetic and much missed presence.

On the 16 December 2014 the company held an informal fundraising event to kick start our fundraising campaign for the new season of dance and to introduce the new company. Former connectingvibes* member Nadia Hinds-Brough held the evening together as a pacey, informative and excellent compere. Guests enjoyed a taster of the new connectingvibes* programme, Talking to Strangers and Jump Up (a Calypso piece) with wonderful music from Raie (Rachel Bennett) and band members – Jordan Brown (bassist), Jie Coe (electric guitar) and Nathan Devonte (background vocals).

Michael Merwitzer, the Artistic Director of The Kosh and longtime supporter, encouraged people to make a donation by giving an entertaining talk about the values of the company. Rosie Smith and Graham Drummond (Chair of connectingvibes*) introduced the fund in Mary Rimington’s name, talking about her work and love of the company. Rosie Smith, who is Mary’s daughter, was elected as a Board member at the AGM in November 2014; she has already made a great contribution in a short space of time.

The evening also celebrated the achievements of past members in order to demonstrate the value of the company as a training ground. Nicoletta Bonanni and Veronika Koleva (company members from 2011-2013 who traveled with the company to Grenada) have established their own independent company ‘Bokatialo’. For this event they performed ‘It’s a Shame‘ with an innovative movement language fusing African, Caribbean, Contemporary dance and Physical Theatre.

In keeping with the achievements of the company the evening presented a short film about the Grenada Project. Seven company members had the opportunity to travel to Grenada to perform in 2013, accompanied by a young camera crew from Hertfordshire Regional College, negotiated by Board member Linda Foster.

Board member Rosie Smith supplied delicious refreshments and the event was supported by Foundation Degree first year students. The connectingvibes* board got the event off the ground through planning and assistance on the night. Big thank you to the connectingvibes* board and to everyone who made a donation:
