The trip to Grenada in May 2013 was an exciting venture for connectingvibes* as, for a long time, everything seemed geared towards the trip in terms of programming and fundraising. The return journey after an absence of 12 years felt particularly special as the initial visit in 2000 witnessed the birth of the company and what has been an incredibly exciting journey.

The culmination of the Grenada project also saw the end of a very successful and dedicated company. Members who travelled to Grenada had been with the company since 2010/11. They formed a cohesive and responsive group able to adapt to a diverse repertoire and take on a range of responsibilities within the company. Above all, they have been brilliant to work with, providing an entertaining and enjoyable atmosphere. It was decided that, while they needed to leave the company, connectingvibes* would also look to use their skills as graduating members to assist with rehearsals for the new company and key education projects. Their experiences have been captured in a film – “The Grenada Collection” to be shown in 2014.

New Ventures

Melissa Carby, Nicoletta Bonnani and Veronika Koleva helped the new company prepare for “Unique” a joint performance event with Midi Music held at the Blackheath Concert Halls in November 2013.

UNIQUE - An evening of dance, music and the spoken word

Melissa has also joined forces with Nafiat Tendo Bukenya, Diana Zvjagintseva and Shermaine Seaman to run a Dance Project with young people in Islington from January-April 2014. The project will be based at City and Islington College, facilitated by Denzil Barnes. The dancers will work with young people to create a piece to perform at the launch of connectingvibes* new programme, “Trading Places” on 23 & 24 April 2014. The project will allow the dancers to take the next step to independently organizing their own work. Funding for the project was received from Islington Community Chest through the Cripplegate Foundation.

connectingvibes* 2013/14

Auditions were successfully held in September 2013 and assisted by the connectingvibes* graduates a new company was structured consisting of four existing members, 8 new dancers and 1 technical assistant. Apprentice photographers will also attend rehearsals throughout the year to record key moments and help build up individual portfolios.

Following on in the connectingvibes* tradition the new company is energetic and hardworking. They have already performed at a public event and learnt three pieces from the repertoire. It will be exciting to see how they develop and leave their own footprints. They will be busy from January completing the new programme for the launch at City and Islington College in April – watch this space for further details of the launch.
